This week, the Greenhouse Project and VTI are honoring Naomi’s legacy with her daughter and advocate for the respect of those with dementia, Vicki de Klerk-Rubin, who is the executive director of the Validation Training Institute.

Naomi Feil, the creator of the Validation technique for connecting and communicating with individuals with dementia, passed away on December 24 at the age of 91.

We invite you to a captivating discussion about Naomi’s journey, her escape from Nazi Germany in her youth, her influential encounters with the elderly, and how the Validation method has been adopted globally.

Recognizing the individual affected by dementia rather than just the condition was a revolutionary concept initiated by Naomi. The eldercare sector profoundly acknowledges her contributions. Naomi Feil, a transformative social worker who used a life’s worth of experience to change the way the world cares for senior citizens and dementia patients, has died at 91. Dr. Harvey Sterns, long-time VTI Board member and professor emeritus of psychology at University of Akron (just two of his many activities) will be presenting our recent research at the Gerontological Society of America Scientific Conference this November in Indianapolis. Our study looked at the effectiveness of the 6 Skill Building Blocks, a totally online, asynchronous training in basic Validation skills.  It was shown to be relevant to caregivers and effective training. „This is a great way to onboard new staff or refresh person-centered skills.“

In 2016 We choose to go beyond the usual philosophy of the house, we seek something broader. The aim was to provide a new vision, to shift the focus to another, important aspect that until then had received little attention : the whole person. Different methods were being evaluated : Gentecare, Montesori, Validation

We are proud to share our recent article in Practical Neurology: Dementia Insights: The Validation Method for Dementia Care. This article explores how physicians can and need to use elements of Validation in their daily work. The Validation community is saddened by the death of Edward R. Feil. Ed’s films and videos made sharing Validation with the world easier and more impactful. Together, Naomi and Ed made a powerful film-making team.

The Validation community is sad to lose one of our pioneers. Lita Kohn was the first President of the VTI Board of Trustees. She is remembered fondly for the Board meetings she hosted in her home, accompanied by wonderful hospitality and food. Most important was her desire to create an organization that would perpetuate Validation. She worked hard to keep the Board on track towards that goal. Her leadership made it possible to be where we are today. She was warm and welcoming as new people joined the board. Naomi Feil could not have had a better supporter.
May her legacy be a memory forever.

The Validation community is sad to lose one of our pioneers. Dave Nilson helped bring Validation training to the Midwest. Dave was truly a good man, a beloved colleague, and a caring and even-tempered professional in the turbulent world of senior care. He was consistently kind, genuine, and committed to doing good. He was gentle, kind and honest. Dave died on September 29th. There is a simple announcement in the Star Tribune. We have lost a friend and supporter.
