Week 6: Webinar 6

  • I met yesterday with my dementia client Mrs T, and i thought i’d share my experience:
I had a try with communicating with Mrs Ives (using validation techniques). She was extremely responsive which I have never experienced in the past. She made eye contact and answered my questions. She asked me how old I am and when I told her I turned 36 yesterday, she made a face like that sounds awful!! I told her I have 4 children. I asked her how many she has and how many she had at my age. She scrunched up her face, struggling to think but said she doesn’t know. I gave her real life doll and she cooed to it and mimicked the faces she saw on its face. She then cradled it and said, “Isn’t he just gorgeous?”
Before Amy left and she told her Bye, she asked, must you go already? She promised she’ll be back and I prompted her to tell her when.
Right before I left, I asked her “Should I take the doll from you or would you like to keep hold of it?”
She responded, “I’m scared it will get lost, I have too many children!” I felt that showed she is trying to have some control of her possessions.
