Validation for Medical Professionals

This training in the Validation method is focused on the needs of physicians and all medical professionals. It was developed with two physicians and an expert in online and adult education.

Participants can expect to spend 1 to 1 1/2 hours per week for 5 weeks. This course blends watching videos, completing exercises, working with case studies, and interactive webinars that anchor new skills.

  • In Lesson 1, you will learn the basics of the Validation method
  • In Lesson 2, you will go deeply into the reasons behind the behavior of many disoriented, very old people. This understanding will be the first of many ‘ah-ha’ moments.
  • In Lesson 3, you will explore basic human needs working with case studies and real-world situations.
  • In Lesson 4, you will practice the 6 most important skills that lead towards a person-centered attitude. You will get feedback and coaching to ensure that these skills are well integrated into your practice.
  • In Lesson 5, you’ll go deeper into Validation techniques that you can use every day with every patient.

Successful completion of this course concludes with a Gateway 2 certificate.

"I cared for an 80-year-old woman with metastatic pancreatic cancer in an inpatient hospice unit.

She was often labeled “difficult” confused, paranoid, and agitated. When she mentioned a baby, staff assumed hallucinations. Because of my Validation training, I asked her about the baby and learned she had lost a child years earlier and never grieved. Sitting with her through that loss shifted something. She became less fearful and more at peace. The skills and knowledge taught in the Validation for Medical Providers training should be available to all physicians, nurses and other professionals who interact with older adults"
